Wakati mwingine chakula ni kibaya hata kabla hakijapikwa wala kuhifadhiwa. Hapa kuna orodha ya mambo ya kuangalia unapochagua chakula.

Chakula lazima:

  • kiwe safi, na katika msimu wake.
  • kisiwe kimekwaruzwa, wala kuliwa na wadudu.
  • kinanukia (hasa samaki na samaki ambaye asiwe na harufu mbaya)

Vyakula vilivyohifadhiwa na kupakiwa lazima viwekwe kwenye:

  • mikebe mipya (isiyo na kutu, iliyofura wala iliyojikunja)
  • vyombo ambavyo vina vifuniko safi.
  • chupa ambazo hazijachibuka.
  • maboksi ambayo hayajapasuka.

Samaki mwenye harufu mbaya au mikebe iliyofura ni ishara kuwa chakula kimeharibika.
