To improve the water from an open waterhole, build stone steps into the water hole so a person can draw water up from a step, without getting wet. Always use the last dry step, depending on how much water is in the hole. Never walk into the water., as this can introduce dirt and germs and make the water unsafe.

Another option is to turn an open water hole into a proper well by lining it with bricks or concrete. This makes it easier to draw water using a clean rope and bucket, and it helps prevent the well from collapsing or drying up. A well that is lined properly can also store more water.

Please do never drink directly from a water hole. Filtering the water through a cloth and letting it settle before drinking will remove some germs. However, it is best to always treat the water from a water hole before drinking to prevent water-related diseases.
