How to protect a spring
Protecting a spring is usually cheaper and simpler than digging a well or a borehole. Once a spring is well protected, it’s also easier to run pipes from the spring to carry the water closer to the community.
To protect the area around a spring, it’s important to fence off the land surrounding the source. This keeps animals out and reduces the risk of contamination. Another useful step is to dig a drainage ditch around the spring area. This ditch carries away any surface runoff or waste water, so it doesn’t reach the spring itself. Planting native trees near the spring offers even more protection. The roots of the trees help hold the soil in place, preventing erosion and keeping the water source clean. The shade from the trees also makes the area more pleasant for collecting water.
For additional protection, consider building a spring box. A spring box is a container that covers the spring and is made from durable materials like masonry, bricks, or concrete. Springs may be far from where people live, making water collection difficult. If water is piped from a spring, the spring box not only protects the water from outside contamination but also makes it easier to collect. The water can be directed through pipes to community taps or storage tanks.
The spring box has several important parts that work together to keep the water safe. The top of the spring box has a cover, which can be removed for cleaning and inspection. An overflow pipe allows extra water to flow out, but it includes a screen to keep out insects and other contaminants. Inside the spring box, there’s a filter screen that prevents sand and soil from entering the pipes, helping to keep the water cleaner. An outlet pipe lets water flow out of the spring box, either for filling containers or to be directed elsewhere. Another pipe, called a scour pipe, is used to flush out any silt or dirt that builds up inside the box.
Spring boxes need to be checked to make sure the spring continues to provide safe water. Silt, leaves, dead animals, and other things can collect in the pipes and spring box and block the pipes or contaminate the water. Put a wire screen on the pipe leading into the spring box to prevent unsafe things from entering pipes. Cleaning the screen every now and again will make sure there is a steady flow of water.
With these steps, a protected spring and a well-maintained spring box can provide a reliable source of clean, safe water for the community.
