What is a drum drip irrigation system
The drum drip irrigation system works similarly to the bucket system but is made for larger areas. Instead of a bucket, this system uses a 100 to 200-liter drum or small tank, placed about one meter above the ground to let the water flow downward. Several drip lines, each of them 15 to 30 meters in length, are connected to a main drip line or pipe, positioned horizontally across the field or garden. Think of the main pipe as the central source of water, and the lateral pipes branch out from it, spreading the water throughout the irrigation area. The main line has a gate valve to control water flow.
In areas where bamboo is readily available, bamboo tubes can replace the usual PVC pipes in this system as a natural and cost-effective option. The bamboo is laid alongside plants, with small holes near each plant to release water directly to the roots.
A drum system can irrigate 500-1000 plants planted with 30 cm between the rows. This system needs about 100 to 200 liters of water daily, depending on the crop and environment. This larger system is suitable for those who need to irrigate a more extensive area while still conserving water and resources.
